LG and Mercedes-Benz to Team UP for next-gen cars

LG has recently announced that it is going to team up with Mercedes-Benz to develop the technology for the forthcoming fleet of Mercedes-Benz self-driving cars.

So, it is pretty clear that the German automaker is going to utilize LG’s Advanced Driving Assistance System technology in its next-generation of self-driving vehicles which are currently in the works.

The ADAS technology is basically a stereo camera system which works much like the human eye to detect objects on the road ahead and spot potential dangers like the pedestrians and cyclists. And moreover, if any hazards are detected in front of the car that the driver has not picked up, then the vehicle will brake autonomously. This technology will surely add up to the safety features of the cars.
This system also ensures that the car keeps moving within the correct lane and dims the headlights in the face of oncoming traffic. Rather than being like the Google’s self-driving car which is completely independent, the Mercedes-Benz’ car will be a semi-autonomous one and this means that the driver will be able to transfer only some of the controls to the vehicle.

The biometric systems of LG are even going to monitor the eye movements and alertness, in order to protect against drivers falling asleep while driving the car. Added to the self-driving technology, LG is also going to provide the home entertainment and mobile technology systems in the cars.

In return to the efforts and technology of LG, Mercedes is going to license part of its 6D Vision technology back to LG to use with other automakers.

According to the sources, The Mercedes-Benz and LG prototype is set to be revealed at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show which has its kick-off planned on January 6 in Las Vegas.

Ghost Car and Invisible Pillars: That's what JLR team is working on

JLR Urban Windscreen, Follow Me "Ghost Car" and Transparent Pillars

Boffins at Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) research and development facility in Whitley are working on an awesome new technology that can make car’s window pillars invisible, and they are also putting their talents in making the next generation windscreens that can overlay information onto the real world.

This new technology comes on Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) recent research into a transparent bonnet that was first seen in the Discovery Vision Concept, which had some cameras mounted underneath the vehicle that provided a live video feed to a massive head-up display that covered the entire windshield.

A spokesperson for JLR said that both camera and head-up display technology have improved with days and more importantly have become cheap enough to begin experimenting with other applications.

Dr. Wolfgang Epple who is the director of research and technology at JLR said that tiny screens have been applied to all pillars inside the research vehicles, which take a live video feed from outside, thus making them almost 'invisible' when needed. This tech could be particularly useful when navigating through a tight parking space, pulling out of a T-junction and also at times like when the hordes of cyclists race along in the busy streets. Moreover, the In-car sensors can also detect when a driver moves their head while overtaking other vehicles, or switch on the indicators, and automatically renders the appropriate pillar 'invisible'.

The humble windscreen has also come under examination by Jaguar Land Rover’s crack team, which has fitted a large head-up display that twains the width of the glass.

This so-called 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen can help the driver in many ways. It can take live information from the Cloud, such as fuel prices and available parking spaces, and overlay them in real time. It can detect the pedestrian walking on the road and even the road signs. And moreover, this technology can help the drivers to fulfill their innermost Gran Turismo fantasies and follow a “Ghost Car” that would help the driver to reach their destination just by following it. This would rather make the drivers not to follow often-unreliable audio cues from a traditional satellite navigation system.

“Driving on city streets can be a stressful experience, but imagine being able to drive across town without having to look at road signs, or be distracted trying to locate a parking space as you drive by,” said Dr. Epple. “We want to present all of this information on a Heads-Up Display in the driver’s eye-line, so the driver doesn’t have to seek it out for themselves and take their eyes off the road ahead.”

Google plans to get Android directly into Cars

Google, the top internet company is now looking forward to lay down the groundwork for a version of Android that would be directly built into cars; allowing drivers to enjoy all the benefits of the internet without having to plug-in their smartphones.  This move can be seen as a major step up from Google’s current Android Auto software, which requires a phone to be plugged into a compatible car to do the stuff.

Google, however, has never provided details or a timeframe for this project, but according to the sources, the company now plans to do so when it introduces the next version of its operating system, dubbed Android M, which is expected to be out of box in a year or so.

Thilo Koslowski, vice president and automotive practice leader of industry research firm Gartner said, “It provides a much stronger foothold for Google to really be part of the vehicle rather than being an add-on," who noted that he was unaware of Google’s latest plans in this area.

Analysts said Google's plan could face various technical and business challenges, including convincing automakers to integrate its services so tightly into their vehicles as direct integration into cars ensure that drivers will use Google’s services every time they turn on the ignition. Doing so could allow Google to make more use of a car’s camera, sensors, fuel gauge and internet connections that come with some newer car models. But, Google declined to comment.

In March, Apple unveiled its CarPlay software and Google has signed on dozens of companies including Hyundai, General Motors and Nissan for its Automotive Alliance and its Android Auto product. Although, CarPlay and Android Auto both currently project their smartphone apps onto the car’s screen.

Technology companies are competing to design appliances, wristwatches and other gadgets that connect to the internet. Automobiles are particularly an attractive prospect of this because Americans spend nearly 50 minutes per day on average on their commute, according to US Census data.

And I would say that if Google is successful with this project, Android would become the standard system powering a car's entertainment and navigation features, solidifying Google's position in a new market where it is competing with arch-rivals like Apple.

The sources declined to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the plans publicly.

Mercedes-Benz Vision G-Code Concept takes solar panel use to a new level

Till date, we have seen many vehicle concepts that use solar panels over or rather in the roof to provide supplementary power for their accessories. However Mercedes-Benz has decided to take this idea of supplementary power from solar energy to an extreme level in its new Vision G-Code Sports Utility (SUC) Concept. The Mercedes-Benz Vision G-Code Concept uses multi-voltaic silver paint which turns the entire body of the vehicle into a massive solar panel that works as a power supplier to the hybrid portion of the vehicle’s gear train.

The multi-Voltaic silver paint electrostatically can also charge the Vision G-Code’s battery, via “relative wind or by using the natural wind when the vehicle is standing still.” Another interesting tech used in the Mercedes-Benz Vision G-Code Concept is that it can generate electricity via a third way too that is via a “power on the move” suspension, which generates electric power using the rebounds of the springs.

The Mercedes Company is not offering up many specifics on the engine that powers the Vision G-Code Concept, but they have given a clue that the front wheels are powered by a traditional turbocharged internal combustion engine (ICE), while the rear axle part is powered by an electric motor that is assumed to be powered by a lithium-ion battery and this battery is charged via the multi-voltaic silver paint and the trick suspension as mentioned before in this article.

Other groovy features that this concept includes are a holographic grille that alerts the passerby to what mode the vehicle is operating in, “suicide” rear doors and the LED headlights.

The features and tech used in this Mercedes-Benz G-Code Concept are really appealing but not to forget that it still is just a concept and nothing more than that. But we can expect to see some technology filter into the high-end vehicles of Mercedes at a later point in future.

Hero MotoCorp sales fall by 8.05 per cent

 

 

World’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp reports that its sales percentage has declined by 8.05 per cent. The total sales include a total sale of 5,75,056 units in the country. Last year the company was able to hit a number of 6,25,420 units.

The company said that it was able to sell out a total of Ten-Lakh units of two-wheeler vehicles in the festive period that was of about 37 days.

Hero MotoCorp reportedly said that a total investment of Rs 5,000 crore has been put in the projects of the company that also include the manufacturing plant in the countries of Colombia and Bangladesh; and even the new upcoming plant in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh and the Hero Global Centre for Research and Design at Kukas in the state of Rajasthan.

In spite of lowering of sales percentage of Hero MotoCorp, the company should expect some good results in coming future as the new concepts of two-wheeler vehicles displayed by the company give a promising sight.
